William “Scott” Conard is a graduate of the California Maritime Academy, class of 1975. He earned his B.S. degree in Marine Engineering as well as his U.S. Coast Guard License as Third Assistant Engineer, Unlimited Horsepower Steam, Motor, and Gas Turbines. Scott started working for the USGS in Pacific Marine Geology and sailed aboard the R/V Sea Sounder from 1976 – 1980 as Asst.Engineer and then Chief Engineer. He returned to the USGS in 1982 to sail as Chief Engineer aboard the R/V Polaris and the R/V S.P. Lee. In 1983, he transferred to Water Resources Division and has sailed continuously to the present as Chief Engineer R/V Polaris.
