HOW MUCH PRIMARY PRODUCTION IS IN THE BAY?

In 1993, there was a total of about 94 billion grams of carbon converted into new plant matter throughout the Bay.

Just how much IS 94 billion grams of carbon?

Humphrey, a young humpback whale who visited San Francisco Bay in 1985, was about 28 feet in length and weighed 40 tons. Humphrey's weight was equivalent to 36 million grams of carbon.

Primary production in San Francisco Bay in 1993 was equivalent to 2600 humpback whales.

Primary production varies dramatically between the major embayments of San Francisco Bay.
