Measurment of Tidal Flows in the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the hub of the State of California's water supply and distribution system. The exportation of water from the Delta is thought to have created several problems within the estuary, primarily with regard to declining fish populations and degradation of water quality; the drinking water supply for 20 million Californians passes through the Delta. Measured flow data are needed:

  • to gain an understanding of the hydrodynamics of the Delta,
  • to determine the quantity of water flowing from the Delta into San Francisco Bay, and
  • to calibrate and validate flow and transport models of the Delta.

Multibeam Data in San Francisco Bay

With spectacular imagery and perspective views of the SF Bayfloor, learn about the hazards that big ships and barges face in navigating San Francisco Bay and what might be done to help.

This Web page series is based on the USGS Open-File Report "Multibeam* Data and Socio-Economic Issues in West-Central San Francisco Bay," USGS OFR 98-139.

*The high-resolution multibeam swath mapping system used here is a hull-mounted sonar array that collects bathymetric soundings with a series of beams, and records the absolute amount of sound reflected back to the array. The data products are highly-detailed bathymetric maps and backscatter images, respectively. A sample of the bathymetric data is shown to the left.

Now Serving - Digital Raster Graphics

Over 300 Digital Raster Graphics of the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles covering the Bay Area are now available from our Bay Area Regional Database (BARD). Each is a color scan of the printed USGS map, available in TIFF format with an accompanying file that will allow you to georeference the image. Complete details and even free viewing software are just a click away.

Real Time Physical Oceanographic Information

The Physical Oceanographic Real Time System (PORTS) is designed to provide crucial information in real time to mariners, oil spill response teams, managers of coastal resources, and others about San Francisco Bay's water levels, currents, salinity, and winds.
